The thermometer:The Basic Facts
Thermometers are everywhere in our modern, technology filled world. But, just as many other things, we can take them for granted. How do thermometers work? How long have they been around?
Essentially, a thermometer is a gadget that is used to measure temperature. All of our weather reports are dependent on them!
Some form of thermometer has been around since around 10 AD, when Hero of Alexandria discovered an early method to measure temperature. The most familiar and precise, “tell me what the weather is” thermometer was first invented in 1714 by a Dutchman called Fahrenheit. This was the first thermometer to contain mercury, in the history of forever.
After the invention of the precision thermometer, there has still been progress! Thermometers have been made more reliably and with safer materials than mercury. Also, we have come up with different types of thermometers that fulfill different functions.
There are still traditional mercury thermometers. You might even have one at home! It is a pretty handy device to have on hand, as it lets you tell what the weather is at just a glance.
If you have ever had a fever, then you have probably met the medical thermometer, which was developed in the seventeenth century! This will adapt and hold the temperature of the human body after it is stuck under an arm, in the mouth, or— gasp!— in an artery (do not try this one at home, kids! Professionals only).
In the era of digital technology, there are— of course— digital thermometers that use infrared technology to detect temperature. These can be used for lots of things, including weather and medical reports.
But, for obvious reasons— namely, insane, ungodly heat— you cannot put a normal thermometer inside your scalding hot oven without disastrous consequences. No one wants a broken thermometer. And no one wants to have mercury as a meal condiment!
Anatomy of the oven thermometer
For cooking purposes— to measure the temperature inside an oven—, you need a thermometer with special characteristics.
First, you need something that has a much higher temperature range than your typical household thermometer. Oven thermometers typically have a range that goes from 50 to 300 degrees Celsius, or 100 to 550 degrees Fahrenheit.
The mechanism that makes an oven thermometer work is also different from traditional thermometers: instead of infrared sensors of mercury, they have a strip made of two pressed-together metals that expand and contract at different temperatures.
This movement makes the dials of the face move to the right temperature indicator. Easy, right? Now to choose the best and most accurate one!
